“Vile” from the Beginning
What if following God means breaking the rules? This sermon challenges us to reconsider what it means to be faithful by exploring the radical concept of “Vile” Love—a willingness to look beyond acceptable practices and social norms to ensure everyone experiences God’s love. We journey back to 1739 when John Wesley, an Oxford-educated clergyman and founder of the Methodist Church, faced a crisis of conscience. Asked to preach outdoors to coal miners in one of the dirtiest cities in Europe, Wesley wrote in his journal that he would ‘submit to be more vile.’ This is our Methodist heritage.
